SK Hynix Starts Supplying High-Speed LPDDR5T Mobile DRAM to Smartphone Makers

In a groundbreaking move, SK Hynix, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, has officially commenced the supply of its latest innovation, the 16 gigabyte (GB) Low Power Double Data Rate 5 Turbo (LPDDR5T) to its clientele.
SK Hynix chip investment in NANDThis cutting-edge LPDDR5T is touted as the fastest mobile DRAM currently available, boasting an impressive data transfer rate of 9.6 gigabits per second (Gbps). Catering specifically to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, LPDDR technology aims to optimize power consumption through low-voltage operation. The LPDDR5T now stands as the pinnacle of this technology, representing the 7th generation in the series, succeeding the 1, 2, 3, 4, 4X, 5, and 5X iterations.

Distinguished as a newly developed version by SK Hynix, the LPDDR5T serves as an upgraded product from the seventh generation (5X), preceding the anticipated development of the 8th generation LPDDR6.

SK Hynix highlights the LPDDR5T as the ideal memory solution to maximize smartphone performance, underscoring its unprecedented speed. The company is committed to expanding the application range of this product, aiming to spearhead the generation shift in the mobile DRAM sector.

Operating in the ultra-low voltage range of 1.01 to 1.12V, as set by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC), the LPDDR5T 16 GB package is capable of processing an astonishing 77 GB of data per second. To put this into perspective, it is equivalent to transferring 15 full high-definition (FHD) movies in just one second.

Excitingly, SK Hynix has already initiated shipments of its LPDDR5T to renowned smartphone manufacturer Vivo.

China-based Vivo has confirmed that its latest flagship smartphones, X100 and X100 Pro, will be equipped with SK Hynix’s state-of-the-art memory packages. These devices will be powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300, with SK Hynix confirming completion of performance verification for application with MediaTek’s next-generation mobile application processors (APs) in August.

Myoungsoo Park, Vice President and Head of DRAM Marketing at SK Hynix, emphasizes the growing demand for high-performing, high-capacity mobile DRAMs in the market, particularly with the increasing implementation of On-Device AI technology. As smartphones evolve into essential devices for AI applications, the LPDDR5T is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting these demands, offering responsive and high-capacity memory solutions for the AI era.
