SK Hynix, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, has unveiled the world’s first 24-gigabyte (GB) Low Power Double Data Rate 5X (LPDDR5X) mobile DRAM package, signaling a significant leap in mobile memory technology. This latest development follows the successful mass production of LPDDR5X in November 2022.
The LPDDR5X DRAM package is designed to cater to the increasing demand for low power consumption and high-performance memory solutions for mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. SK Hynix’s LPDDR5X represents the seventh generation of its LPDDR product line, succeeding the highly acclaimed LPDDR5 series.
One of the remarkable features of this innovation is the integration of the High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process, which utilizes a high-dielectric-constant material in the insulating film of DRAM transistors. This integration results in reduced leakage currents, improved capacitance, lower power consumption, and enhanced processing speed. Notably, SK Hynix achieved an industry first by incorporating the HKMG process into mobile DRAM in November 2022.
The 24GB LPDDR5X package operates within an ultra-low voltage range of 1.01 to 1.12 volts, adhering to standards set by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC). This cutting-edge memory solution is capable of processing an impressive 68GB of data per second, equivalent to transferring a remarkable 13 Full-HD movies in a single second.
Recent collaborative efforts between SK Hynix and China-based smartphone manufacturer OPPO have led to the incorporation of the 24GB LPDDR5X package into the latest flagship device, the Oneplus Ace 2 Pro, which was officially launched on August 10th. The collaboration has resulted in an optimized multi-tasking environment and extended battery life for users.
SK Hynix’s Vice President and Head of DRAM Marketing, Myoungsoo Park, emphasized the expanding role of modern smartphones beyond communication devices, envisioning them as essential components in the forthcoming AI era.
The growing integration of AI technology into smartphones highlights the significance of enhancing semiconductor memory performance. As the demand for advanced edge devices continues to surge, the memory industry is projected to experience further growth.
“With a rapidly evolving IT industry, our LPDDR products are poised to support a diverse range of applications, including PCs, servers, high-performance computing (HPC), and automotive vehicles,” stated Myoungsoo Park.
The introduction of the 24GB LPDDR5X mobile DRAM package marks another milestone for SK Hynix, solidifying its position as a trailblazer in the semiconductor industry. As mobile devices continue to evolve and play a central role in our digital lives, SK Hynix’s technological advancements are set to reshape the landscape of mobile memory solutions and drive innovation across various sectors.
