The company, which is exhibiting its chip capabilities at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2015), will float MediaTek Ventures that will be headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
MediaTek Ventures will initially invest in mobile startups in Greater China, Europe, Japan and North America. This indicates Indian mobile start-ups will not be part of the investment in the initial phase.
The primary focus will be semiconductor-system-and devices, Internet infrastructure, services and IoT, with the goal of creating a collaborative ecosystem around MediaTek’s corporate objectives in communication, computing, online media and analytics. The company said its investments will include all stages of funding.
MediaTek also announced CrossMount, a technology to simplify hardware and software resource sharing between different consumer devices. CrossMount framework ensures any compatible device can use and share hardware or software resources authorized by the user. Chang-hong, Hisense, Lenovo and TCL are the first MediaTek customers to support CrossMount.
Meanwhile, MediaTek announced the first tablet system-on-chip (SoC) that features ARM Cortex-A72 processor. The Quad-core MT8173 is designed to maximize the benefits of the new processor and increase tablet performance.
The MT8173 is designed with a 64-bit Multi-core big.LITTLE architecture that combines two Cortex-A72 CPUs and two Cortex-A53 CPUs. MT8173 boasts a six-fold increase in performance compared to the MT8125 released in 2013. MT8173 offers up to 2.4GHz performance, supporting OpenCL with the deployment of MediaTek Corepilot 2.0.
MediaTek also announced the release of the MT6753, a 64-bit Octa-core mobile system-on-chip (SoC) with support for WorldMode modem capability. The first commercial devices will be available in Q2 2015.
