Xiaomi launches MediaTek-powered Redmi 9A in India

Xiaomi on Wednesday launched a new budget smartphone Redmi 9A at a starting price of Rs 6,799 for the 2GB+32GB model in India.

The model with 3GB RAM with 32GB internal storage option will cost Rs 7,499.

The Redmi 9A does not have a fingerprint sensor. Instead, the company offers face unlock security feature on it.

The Redmi 9A smartphone delivers connectivity options such as dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, microUSB, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

“Redmi 9A aims to uphold the legacy set by its predecessors and does so by bringing a high-quality media experience with the HD+ LCD IPS display with a dot-notch. This is a major upgrade over competition devices in the price segment,” Sneha Tainwala, Redmi Business Lead, Mi India, said in a statement.

The smartphone will be available in three colour variants from September 4.

The 6.53-inch device comes with TUV Rheinland Low Blue Light certification, allowing better visibility in reading mode.

The smartphone is powered by octa-core MediaTek Helio G25 chipset coupled with up to 3GB RAM and a dedicated microSD card slot allowing expansion up to 512GB.

Redmi 9A comes with a 13MP AI camera on the rear with features such as AI Portrait mode, AI scene detection. It has a 5MP AI selfie camera with AI portrait mode.

The smartphone features 5000mAh battery. The company claims that the battery may last for 2.5-3 years as compared to regular batteries that last for 2-years only.

Xiaomi said Redmi A series is one of the most successful series of smartphones in India and worldwide. Redmi A series smartphones have been consistently a part of top 5 sold devices in India every quarter since Q3 2017 to Q1 2020 as per IDC India.

Some of Redmi A series phones, Redmi 5A and Redmi 6A were the #1 smartphones globally as per Canalys Smartphone Analysis – Q3 2018 and Canalys Smartphone Analysis – Q1 2019.

Redmi 8A Dual was the #1 shipped device in India in Q2 2020, as per IDC Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, June 2020.

Redmi 8 series, which included Redmi 8, Redmi 8A and Redmi 8A Dual, has shipped more than 25 million units globally.
