BSNL Satellite Handset Strengthens India’s Remote Connectivity Strategy as Satellite Communications Complement 4G and 5G

State-owned telecom operator BSNL has strengthened India’s satellite communications capabilities with the launch of a dedicated satellite handset, reinforcing the country’s efforts to provide reliable connectivity in remote, disaster-prone, and infrastructure-limited regions. According to GlobalData, the initiative supports India’s vision of an always-connected future by extending communications beyond the reach of conventional mobile networks.

The launch reflects a shift in the telecom industry, where satellite connectivity is increasingly viewed as a complementary technology to terrestrial 4G and 5G networks rather than a replacement. While mobile broadband continues to serve the vast majority of consumers, satellite services are emerging as an essential layer of communications resilience for critical situations and hard-to-reach locations.

BSNL Launches Dedicated Satellite Handset for Mission-Critical Communications

Priced at INR 134,166 (approximately $1,406.59), including taxes, the satellite handset is designed for specialized users rather than the mass consumer market. Unlike conventional smartphones that rely on nearby cellular towers, the handset connects directly to Inmarsat’s satellite network, enabling voice calls and SMS services even where terrestrial mobile infrastructure is unavailable.

The rugged handset features a durable design, extended battery life, and an integrated SOS function, making it suitable for emergency response teams, maritime operators, defense organizations, disaster management agencies, border security personnel, government departments, and enterprises operating in isolated locations such as mining sites, oil and gas facilities, power infrastructure, and remote construction projects.

BSNL has also introduced a range of prepaid and postpaid satellite service plans tailored for government and commercial customers, highlighting its strategy of serving mission-critical communications instead of competing directly with mainstream mobile operators.

Why Satellite Communications Matter in India

Although India has one of the world’s largest mobile networks with widespread 4G coverage and rapidly expanding 5G services, connectivity gaps still exist across mountainous regions, forests, deserts, offshore waters, islands, and disaster-affected areas.

Satellite communications provide an important solution where deploying terrestrial mobile towers is economically or physically challenging. During natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes, or landslides, satellite connectivity can also remain operational even when conventional telecom infrastructure is damaged, enabling emergency responders and government agencies to coordinate rescue and relief operations.

For sectors including maritime, defense, logistics, utilities, transportation, and natural resources, satellite communications offer dependable connectivity regardless of terrain or the availability of cellular networks.

GlobalData: Satellite Services Will Complement Rather Than Replace Mobile Networks

Pradeepthi Kantipudi, Telecom Analyst at GlobalData, said the relatively high cost of satellite communication devices and service plans means satellite connectivity is unlikely to disrupt India’s mainstream SIM-based mobile market.

According to GlobalData, satellite communications address a unique requirement by delivering dependable connectivity where geography, limited infrastructure, or natural disasters prevent conventional cellular services from operating. Instead of replacing existing mobile networks, satellite services are expected to complement 4G and 5G by providing connectivity when terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable.

BSNL Advances Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity

Beyond launching a dedicated satellite handset, BSNL is expanding its satellite strategy through its partnership with Viasat to develop Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite communications.

The initiative aims to enable compatible smartphones to connect directly with satellites for emergency messaging when cellular towers cannot be reached. Unlike traditional satellite phones that require dedicated hardware, D2D technology is expected to allow supported smartphones to access satellite connectivity for selected services, improving public safety and emergency communications.

The technology represents an important step toward integrating satellite and terrestrial mobile networks into a unified communications ecosystem capable of maintaining connectivity during emergencies.

BSNL Expands Beyond Traditional Mobile Services

The company’s dual strategy of offering dedicated satellite handsets alongside future Direct-to-Device capabilities positions it to address growing demand for resilient communications across remote villages, border regions, mountainous areas, offshore locations, and disaster-affected communities.

BSNL’s satellite communications strategy comes as India’s satellite connectivity market is becoming increasingly competitive, with global and domestic players investing in different technologies and business models.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, is preparing to offer low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband services in India, targeting consumers, businesses and remote communities with high-speed internet access once commercial rollout expands.

Eutelsat OneWeb, backed by Bharti Enterprises, has already established a significant presence in India’s enterprise satellite broadband market. The company focuses on providing connectivity for government agencies, enterprises, telecom operators, aviation, maritime services and rural broadband projects through its LEO satellite constellation.

Jio Platforms has partnered with SES through the JioSpaceFiber venture to deliver satellite broadband across India, particularly targeting areas where fiber and conventional mobile infrastructure remain limited. The service complements Reliance Jio’s nationwide fiber and 5G networks.

Meanwhile, AST SpaceMobile and Lynk Global are advancing Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite technologies globally, enabling standard smartphones to communicate directly with satellites without requiring dedicated satellite handsets.
