MTN Nigeria Invests ₦202.4bn in Network

MTN Nigeria spent ₦202.4bn in early 2025 to upgrade its network, a 159 percent increase from last year. The company received approval for 50 percent tariff changes, helping it meet growing data use. MTN is following its Ambition 2025 plan, which includes more network spending and wider digital access. It signed a deal with Airtel Africa to share infrastructure. The Nigerian Communications Commission said telecom firms ordered over $1bn in equipment from China to improve networks across the country.

Corero and Forte Telecom Launch DDoS Security Platform

Corero Network Security and Forte Telecom launched the NTD3400, a DDoS protection system, in Brazil. It handles 800Gbps of traffic and helps keep networks running. Forte Telecom started a new branch in the US to offer more security services. The companies will show the system at the Abrint Global Congress in Sao Paulo.

Izzi Moves Systems to Oracle Cloud

Izzi, part of Grupo Televisa, moved its business systems to Oracle Cloud. This cut billing time by 70 percent and invoicing time by 60 percent, helping the company get paid faster. The change includes Oracle’s CRM tools and supports Izzi’s plan to use different cloud services. After buying Sky Mexico, Izzi now serves 17 million users in 157 cities and plans to improve customer management with Oracle tools.

Nigerian Telecom Operators Deny Helping Criminals

Telecom companies in Nigeria denied claims they help criminals by not sharing user data. Some people, including a lawmaker and crime victims, say mobile networks are used for illegal activities. The SIM-NIN system, meant to improve security, has been criticized for not helping to catch criminals.

The telecom association (ALTON) said they give data to authorities but can’t control how criminals use phones. They also said the government should handle social media content rules. The situation shows the need for better teamwork between telecoms, security, and the government.

Apple Must Pay $502 million to Optis

Apple must pay $502 million to Optis Cellular Technology for using their 4G patents. The UK court ruled Apple used Optis’ patents in their phones and tablets without paying properly.

Apple said they will appeal and criticized Optis for just enforcing patents. Optis said the ruling shows the value of their patents.

RCom-Ericsson Dispute Over Payment Continues

The legal fight between Reliance Communications (RCom) and Ericsson is ongoing. Ericsson sued RCom in 2017 for unpaid bills. In 2019, RCom paid Rs 458.77 crore to Ericsson after a court order, with help from the Ambanis. Now, RCom’s lawyer says the payment was unfair to other creditors and should be returned. Ericsson says the payment was required by the court.
