Today’s telecom news includes announcements on India’s quantum communication, Starlink, India’s $4 billion plan for Village Internet, among others.

India Shows 5G, 6G, and Quantum Communication Plans at Bharat Telecom Expo
India is aiming to lead in telecom innovation, said Union Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia at Bharat Telecom 2025 in New Delhi. The event focused on India’s plans for 5G, 6G, and quantum communication. Jyotiraditya Scindia said 99 percent of villages are connected to 5G, and 82 percent of people are on the network. India has set up 470,000 towers in 22 months. The event had 130 international delegates from 35 countries, showing India’s role in the global telecom industry.
Starlink’s Satellite-to-Phone Service
Starlink’s satellite-to-phone service is growing fast and competing with mobile phone networks. From 2024, people with 4G and 5G phones can connect directly to Starlink satellites for calls, texts, and data, without using mobile towers. Starlink is already a major internet provider in Nigeria, with over 65,000 users. As satellite speeds improve, it may replace 4G for many users. Mobile companies may need to work with Starlink to keep customers. Google and Meta are also changing how users are verified, which could affect income from SMS services. MTN and Airtel are working with satellite companies like OneWeb to bring internet to rural areas where it’s cheaper than using regular networks.
India’s $ 4bn Plan for Village Internet
India is investing USD 4 billion to bring high-speed internet to every village. India has already connected most villages with 5G and set up 470,000 towers. These efforts have made India the second-largest telecom market, with affordable data prices. India is preparing for 6G and wants to be a leader in future telecom technology. The country is also focusing on satellite internet and mobile manufacturing. The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has helped India grow its telecom manufacturing and become a major producer of mobile phones.
