Building the Backbone: Fiber First Strategy Set to Transform State Broadband Networks

The Fiber Broadband Association has released a new framework through its Middle Mile Working Group to guide U.S. states in strengthening fiber infrastructure. The guidance emphasizes a “fiber first” approach, highlighting the importance of robust middle mile networks that connect core systems to last mile services, ensuring reliable and scalable broadband. Key recommendations include cross agency coordination, maintaining statewide fiber asset inventories, adopting dig once policies, and leveraging existing public infrastructure. The framework also calls for modernized permitting processes to speed up deployment and improve network expansion efficiency.

Next-Gen Rail Safety: NFR’s Smart OFC System Transforms Level Crossing Monitoring

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced an advanced Optical Fibre Cable (OFC)-based integrated communication system at 50 level crossing gates to enhance safety and efficiency. The system enables real-time monitoring of gate operations by Station Masters, improving coordination and response times. It integrates voice communication, CCTV surveillance, and an IP-based public address system for comprehensive audio-visual monitoring. A key feature is AI-powered noise filtering, ensuring clear communication by eliminating background disturbances such as train horns. Additional capabilities include voice logging, group communication, and battery monitoring, making the system a significant upgrade in railway safety management.

Telecom Giants Race Against Time, Clear ₹13,000+ Crore AGR Dues

Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices have paid over ₹13,000 crore in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues to the Department of Telecommunications just before the deadline marking the end of a four-year moratorium. Airtel contributed around ₹9,200 crore, while Tata Teleservices paid about ₹4,170 crore. Airtel had earlier sought a reassessment of its dues, citing calculation errors, but did not receive relief from the government. The payments highlight the ongoing financial burden on telecom operators as disputes over AGR calculations continue between companies and authorities.
