Today’s telecom news includes announcements on DoT, Ericsson, Ooredoo Qatar, Kyivstar, Starlink, among others.

DoT Frees Up 77–81 GHz Band, Driving Next-Gen Vehicle Safety in India
DoT has delicensed the 77–81 GHz frequency band for short‑range vehicle radar systems used in advanced driver‑assistance systems (ADAS). Manufacturers and radar-system makers no longer need a spectrum assignment license if the radar follows technical norms, including non-interference and shared frequency use. The move aims to boost domestic innovation, lower costs for radar and ADAS hardware, and encourage adoption of safety features like autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, and lane-change assist.
5G Goes Green: Ericsson and Ooredoo Qatar Achieve 15 percent Energy Savings with Smart Automation
Ericsson and Ooredoo Qatar successfully completed a proof-of-concept (PoC) trial of “Automated Energy Saver,” part of Ericsson’s 5G Advanced Energy Efficiency and Management solutions, which dynamically adapts radio resource usage to real-time traffic and network demand. Over one week, the PoC cut radio power consumption by about 15 percent while maintaining network performance and user experience. This demonstrates investment in sustainable, intelligent network infrastructure, aligning with long-term goals of efficiency and lower environmental impact.
Kyivstar Transforms Connectivity
Kyivstar became the first European operator to activate Starlink direct‑to‑device (D2D) satellite connectivity, enabling standard 4G smartphones to send SMS even when terrestrial networks fail. This innovation enhances resilience during blackouts or infrastructure damage, ensuring continuous communications for civilians, businesses, and emergency services while demonstrating a strong customer-focused approach.
