Today’s telecom news includes announcements on AT&T’s free wireless account lock feature, data centre expansion in Vietnam, India plans spectrum for private 5G networks, among others.

AT&T launches free Wireless Account Lock feature
AT&T has launched a free Wireless Account Lock feature for added security against unauthorized changes to wireless accounts. Available via the myAT&T app for postpaid consumers, it prevents actions like billing changes, SIM swaps, or device purchases unless the account is manually unlocked. A similar lock is also available for business and prepaid accounts, with access managed online. Users may need to temporarily unlock the account for authorized family or business members to make changes.
Vietnam Telecom Giants Drive Major Data Centre Expansion
Telecom operators in Vietnam are expanding its data centre sector as part of its digital infrastructure strategy. Telecom companies including Viettel IDC, VNPT, FPT Telecom, CMC, and VNG are leading the developments. Viettel is building a 140 MW data centre in Ho Chi Minh City with 10,000 racks and AI-powered infrastructure, set to complete by 2030. Viettel also plans 24 additional centres with a combined capacity of 560 MW by 2030. Vietnam currently has around 51 MW of operational capacity, 11 MW under construction, and 28 MW in planning. In 2023, the country had 28 data centres totaling 45 MW. Telecom firms are deploying 5G to support edge data centres. Vietnam operates five submarine cables and is adding Asia Direct Cable and SEA-Japan Cable 2. Local companies are partnering with global technology providers such as NVIDIA to develop AI infrastructure, according to Data Centre Magazine.
DoT Launches New Survey to Gauge Spectrum Demand for Private 5G Networks
India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a survey to assess demand for spectrum allocation for private 5G networks via the Saral Sanchar portal. DoT seeks input from enterprises on preferred spectrum bands for captive non-public networks (CNPNs), either through direct allocation or leasing from telecom operators. The previous bands surveyed had limited device support. DoT has invited enterprises with a net worth above ₹100 crore and system integrators to submit feedback by July 31, The Economic Times reports.
Airtel Leads 5G Speeds in Himachal Pradesh with 573 Mbps, Jio Faces Congestion Challenges
According to TRAI’s Independent Drive Test for May 2025, Airtel recorded a 5G download speed of 572.97 Mbps in Himachal Pradesh. In the same region, Jio’s 5G speed was 326.39 Mbps. Airtel’s results reflect efforts to improve network performance in targeted areas. Jio has rolled out 5G across India, with users connected to 5G for 66.7 percent of their usage time. However, network congestion has lowered download speeds in some locations. This suggests telecom providers are focusing on balancing wide coverage with network optimization to maintain service quality. The data shows ongoing work in the telecom industry to enhance both speed and connectivity for users. Improving network infrastructure and managing traffic are key to handling the increasing demand for 5G services.
