SK Telecom, Ericsson to demo 5G at Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics

Mobile service provider SK Telecom and network vendor Ericsson are aiming to demonstrate 5G at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

As per a MoU announced today, they will conduct research on 5G and develop core technologies that hold high potential to become standards of the next generation network.

New telecom technologies that will gain focus as per the agreement include small cell, ultra-wideband, low latency technology that could be used for remote driving, FDD/TDD convergence technology, gigabyte-level data transmission technology etc.

SK Telecom Starts Joint Research with Ericsson for 5G

Park Jin-hyo, senior vice president and head of Network Technology R&D Center at SK Telecom, said: “We will continue to lead development of technologies for the era of the next generation network.”

SK Telecom, which posted KRW 16.602 trillion in revenue in 2013, is chairing 5G Forum, established by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and industry-academia partnership to develop 5G.

Recently, Ericsson and SK Telecom demonstrated 5Gbps, the world’s fastest LTE-based network speed in the 15GHz bandwidth on July 2.
