Net mobile, a provider of value-added services and payment solutions, has used a new technology from Bell Labs, an Alcatel-Lucent company, to improve video streaming quality.
The technology called Context-Aware Video Streaming based on Bell Labs’ Context-Aware Radio Access (CARA) solution can improve streaming levels by six-fold without consuming any extra network capacity, said Alcatel-Lucent.
Dieter Plassmann, CTO of net mobile AG said: “The improvement of streaming quality while on-the-go is a major challenge for all stakeholders in the mobile industry, including network operators, equipment vendors, content as well as service providers.”
Location-based information including road and network coverage maps and radio performance data can be used for delivering algorithms that predict upcoming network performance. Utilizing the prediction, network operators can deliver more video to consumer device in areas of good coverage before the vehicle enters a poor coverage area. The end result is reduction in video stalling and better quality of experience to consumers.
Net mobile measured the gains in quality during test drives at Dusseldorf in Germany over a mobile network. During the test, the company used two devices, one with context-aware technology and one without to compare difference in quality of video streaming on-the-road.
