Al Jazeera Unveils Smartphone Apps on Service2Media’s App Lifecycle Platform

Service2Media announced the launch of Al Jazeera’s new smartphone news application, developed on Service2Media’s App Lifecycle platform.

Al Jazeera selected Service2Media, a member of the BlackBerry Alliance Program, because of its capabilities across multiple devices and more specifically for BlackBerry smartphones. Service2Media works with leading media companies across the world on their mobile strategy.

Al Jazeera wanted to stand out from traditional news apps, by developing an app with high usability, but at the same time a unique look and feel.

Following creative meetings and functional discussions, the graphical and interactive design and user experience for the app were agreed. Service2Media came up with various design scenarios, reaching beyond the typical design for apps on smartphones running the BlackBerry OS, Android or iOS, which best matched Al Jazeera’s brand values.

The new app provides many enhanced features, such as selecting news categories supported by video and pictures. Furthermore, the Al Jazeera app  provides new ideas on how to browse through articles with functionality such as full article view, quick scan and ‘view next.’

Now the first English release of the apps is launched on Service2Media’s App Lifecycle Platform for BlackBerry and Android smartphones. English language versions will shortly be followed by an Arabic version, with a different look, feel and color scheme.

Besides the fact that the Service2Media’s App Lifecycle Platform is covering all the major mobile OS platforms it also has the capabilities to deal with the massive user volumes Al Jazeera needs to cater for. Due to recent developments in the Middle East, the Service2Media platform needs to be ready to deal with volumes that easily multiply by 20, in times of news peaks.

We are very happy to facilitate Al Jazeera with our App Lifecycle Platform, providing them with a future proof roadmap regardless of the chosen app platform or device type,” said Geert Kolthof, CEO Service2Media. A news channel with a reputation such as Al Jazeera requires only the best. We are happy Al Jazeera has chosen us as their app partner, supporting them with the full lifecycle of their core & critical apps.”
