MediaPlatform has partnered with Riverbed
to optimize Cloud-based video on demand.
The joint offering integrates
MediaPlatform’s PrimeTime media management technology with Riverbed Cloud
Steelhead enabling enterprises to optimize Internet bandwidth load while
accessing VOD content stored in the cloud.
Enterprises testing a new cloud-based video
on demand technology from MediaPlatform, coupled with a Riverbed Steelhead wide
area network (WAN) optimization solution, have experienced an 80 percent
reduction in Internet bandwidth consumption over other VOD offerings.
“As organizations create more video
content, using the cloud for storage and management of these media assets is
becoming an increasingly attractive alternative,” said Greg Pulier,
founder and president, MediaPlatform.
Enterprises maintain a connection to the
Internet through its datacenter. As users request videos from a cloud VOD
solution, the media file will stream from the cloud to the viewer through that
Internet connection.
Multiple requests for the same video,
however, will generate repeated downloads of the same media asset through the
constrained connection. This repetitive traffic is inefficient and can consume
the organization’s bandwidth causing performance issues.
The joint offering from MediaPlatform and
Riverbed solves this problem by using Riverbed deduplication and compression
for on-demand video streams the first time these streams are accessed from a
PrimeTime server in the cloud.
“Bandwidth limitations inhibit the
ability of distributed organizations to deliver enterprise video over the
network,” said Venugopal Pai, vice president, global alliances at Riverbed.
