Huawei to Build Knowledge Network of 1000 Rural Schools Through E-HOPE Program

Huawei Telecommunications, a global telecom solutions provider, launched the E-HOPE for Computer Education program.

The E-HOPE aims to equip schoolchildren with basic technical knowhow and access to the latest information, technology and computer systems. By promoting equal access to connectivity, the program will contribute significantly to bridging the digital divide.

The initiative was recently inaugurated at the Delhi secretariat by chief minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit. Also present at the event were Sandeep Dikshit, member of Parliament from East Delhi; Rakesh Mohan, principal secretary of Education, Delhi; P Krishnamurthy, director of Education, Delhi; and Max Yang, CEO, Huawei India, among others.

We truly believe it is imperative that a responsible corporate integrates its core expertise and business acumen to the contribution towards society,” said Max Yang, CEO of Huawei India.

Being a technology organization we understand the importance that interconnectivity, computer skills and a global knowledge network can bring to students at a young age.  With this aim in mind our program is targeted towards the young students of India and we are deeply encouraged that it has been supported and appreciated by the government,” Yang added.

As a pilot program in the national capital territory, E-HOPE will initially be launched in select districts of Delhi. Centre for Market Research & Social Development (CMSD), the implementing partner for the project will be responsible for the successful execution and roll-out of the program in these schools.

Imparting computer literacy to high school students, E-HOPE for Computer Education intends to reach about 100,000 children annually. Huawei India plans to replicate the E-Hope initiative across India, building a knowledge network of 1,000 rural schools.

‘Bridging the Digital Divide’ is one of Huawei’s CSR initiatives to bridge the gap between technology rich and technology poor nations and is a part of the company’s global CSR strategy. Huawei constantly strives to work in the areas of environmental protection, community support, caring for employees, and optimizing supply chain CSR management in countries other than India such as UK, Germany, Croatia, France, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Morocco, Ghana and many more.

Recently Huawei announced the ‘Maitree Scholarship Program’ as part of its CSR initiatives in India. The scholarship program is open to Indian undergraduate and postgraduate students who have already secured admission to institutions of higher education in China.  The initiative aims to build a platform for the exchange of ideas between the two nations, and foster a closer understanding of each others’ culture and society.
