JioHotstar Launches in UK, Canada and Singapore: Pricing Undercuts Netflix and Disney+ in Global Streaming Push

JioHotstar has launched internationally across the UK, Canada and Singapore with an aggressive subscription strategy that positions the Indian streaming platform as a relatively low-cost alternative to global streaming leaders such as Netflix and Disney+, while also competing directly with Indian-content specialist Sony LIV.

JioHotstar pricing vs Netflix vs Disney+

The international expansion gives JioHotstar access to large South Asian diaspora audiences while introducing more than 160,000 hours of entertainment across 12+ languages to a wider global customer base. The platform plans to add more than 30,000 hours of fresh content annually, strengthening a catalogue spanning television, movies, originals, regional programming, reality shows, non-fiction, kids and anime.

Pricing is likely to become one of JioHotstar’s strongest competitive tools.

Effective September 2, 2026, JioHotstar costs £19.99 quarterly or £69.99 annually in the UK, CAD19.99 quarterly or CAD49.99 annually in Canada, and SGD29.98 quarterly or SGD69.98 annually in Singapore.

The introduction of quarterly subscriptions across all three markets is particularly significant because it gives customers a shorter commitment than the annual subscription while still avoiding the conventional monthly pricing model used by many streaming rivals.

On an annualised basis, the pricing makes JioHotstar particularly competitive.

A UK customer paying £69.99 annually effectively spends around £5.83 per month. In Canada, CAD49.99 annually works out at approximately CAD4.17 per month, while the SGD69.98 Singapore annual subscription is equivalent to approximately SGD5.83 per month.

The annual plans also offer substantial savings compared with continuously renewing the new quarterly subscriptions. Four quarterly subscriptions would cost £79.96 in the UK, CAD79.96 in Canada and SGD119.92 in Singapore. Choosing the annual plan therefore saves approximately £9.97, CAD29.97 and SGD49.94, respectively.

The difference is particularly striking in Singapore, where the annual subscription costs about 42 percent less than paying for four consecutive quarterly periods.

JioHotstar vs Netflix Pricing

Netflix remains one of JioHotstar’s biggest global competitors, but JioHotstar enters the three markets at considerably lower effective annual pricing.

In the UK, Netflix currently charges £5.99 per month for Standard with adverts, £12.99 for Standard and £18.99 for Premium. That translates into annual spending of approximately £71.88, £155.88 and £227.88, respectively, if prices remain unchanged.

JioHotstar’s £69.99 annual plan is therefore even slightly below the annualised cost of Netflix’s cheapest advertising-supported UK subscription.

The difference becomes larger against Netflix Standard: JioHotstar costs around 55 percent less on an annual basis.

Canada presents an even more aggressive comparison. Netflix charges CAD7.99 per month for Standard with ads, CAD18.99 for Standard and CAD23.99 for Premium.

Netflix Standard therefore costs approximately CAD227.88 over 12 months, compared with only CAD49.99 annually for JioHotstar. JioHotstar’s annual price is roughly 78 percent lower than the annualised Netflix Standard price.

In Singapore, Netflix prices are SGD15.98 per month for Basic, SGD22.98 for Standard and SGD29.98 for Premium. Netflix Basic alone would cost approximately SGD191.76 annually, almost 2.7 times JioHotstar’s SGD69.98 annual subscription.

JioHotstar vs Disney+ Pricing

Disney+ provides another useful comparison because of its extensive international entertainment catalogue.

In the UK, Disney+ currently charges £5.99 per month for Standard With Ads, £9.99 for Standard and £14.99 for Premium. Its annual ad-free plans cost £99.90 for Standard and £149.90 for Premium.

JioHotstar’s £69.99 annual price is consequently £29.91 cheaper than Disney+ Standard and £79.91 cheaper than Disney+ Premium.

In Canada, Disney+ costs CAD8.99 per month for Standard With Ads, CAD15.99 for Standard and CAD16.99 for Premium. Annual subscriptions are CAD159.99 for Standard and CAD169.99 for Premium.

JioHotstar at CAD49.99 annually costs CAD110 less than Disney+ Standard and CAD120 less than Disney+ Premium.

Singapore shows a similarly substantial pricing gap. Disney+ Standard costs SGD18.98 per month or SGD159.98 annually, while Premium costs SGD22.98 per month or SGD189.98 annually.

JioHotstar’s SGD69.98 annual subscription is therefore approximately 56 percent cheaper than Disney+ Standard and about 63 percent cheaper than Disney+ Premium.

Amazon Prime Video Adds Another Price Benchmark

Amazon Prime Video is another major competitor, although comparisons are complicated because Amazon bundles streaming with broader Prime benefits in some markets.

In the UK, standalone Prime Video costs £7.99 per month, while the complete Amazon Prime membership costs £8.99 monthly or £95 annually.

Against the £95 annual Amazon Prime membership, JioHotstar’s £69.99 annual subscription is £25.01 cheaper.

In Canada, Amazon Prime costs CAD9.99 per month or CAD99 annually, with Prime Video among the benefits. JioHotstar’s CAD49.99 annual price is almost exactly half the cost of the CAD99 Amazon Prime membership, although Prime provides shopping and other services beyond video streaming.

Sony LIV Is JioHotstar’s Closest Indian-Content Pricing Rival

Sony LIV is particularly relevant because both services target viewers interested in Indian entertainment.

Sony LIV lists its Premium subscription in the UK at £7.99 monthly and £36.99 annually. In Singapore, Sony LIV pricing is SGD9.99 monthly and SGD66.98 annually.

That makes Sony LIV cheaper than JioHotstar in the UK, where JioHotstar costs £69.99 annually versus £36.99 for Sony LIV.

Singapore is much closer: Sony LIV’s SGD66.98 annual plan is only SGD3 below JioHotstar’s SGD69.98.

Sony LIV also lists Canadian pricing of CAD9.99 monthly and CAD49.99 annually, meaning its annual subscription is priced exactly the same as JioHotstar’s CAD49.99 annual Canadian plan.

This makes Sony LIV arguably the most direct price competitor for JioHotstar among Indian-focused streaming services, while Netflix and Disney+ operate at significantly higher price points.

Pricing Could Become JioHotstar’s International Advantage

JioHotstar is not competing purely on price. Its proposition combines Indian television, movies and streaming originals with regional-language programming and interactive formats.

The platform is launching internationally with Bigg Boss across six languages. Viewers in the UK, Canada and Singapore will be able to vote live across editions, while audiences in Canada and the UK receive access to a 24×7 live feed. Canadian subscribers can also watch Bigg Boss Hindi seven days ahead of its television broadcast.

Customers in Canada and Singapore will get India Ka Top 1 Percent, hosted by Anil Kapoor. JioStar television programming from channels including Star Plus, Colors, Star Vijay, Asianet, Star Jalsha and Star Pravah will also form an important part of the service.

Singapore and Canadian subscribers will receive Before-TV access to selected shows, while UK audiences can watch popular programmes simultaneously with their television broadcast.

JioHotstar’s catalogue includes originals such as Criminal Justice, Special Ops, Asur, Aarya, Kerala Crime Files and Heartbeat, alongside reality franchises including Koffee with Karan, Khatron Ke Khiladi, MTV Hustle, Splitsvilla, Roadies and Cooku with Comali.

The service is available across mobile devices and Connected TVs through Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store. Android customers across the three international markets can subscribe directly through the application.

Existing Hotstar customers can use their current credentials and will automatically move to an equivalent JioHotstar subscription without interruption. Existing UK customers can also retain their current monthly subscriptions while automatic renewal remains active.

The platform supports subtitles and dubbing across 12+ Asian languages, including English, Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi.

For JioHotstar, the combination of 160,000+ hours of content, 30,000+ hours of new programming every year, regional-language depth and annual subscriptions starting at effectively about £5.83, CAD4.17 and SGD5.83 per month creates a clear value proposition.

Rather than trying to match Netflix and Disney+ as another broad global streaming library, JioHotstar appears to be using aggressive pricing and its large Indian entertainment catalogue to establish a distinct position. Its biggest opportunity is the South Asian diaspora, but the comparatively low subscription cost could also help JioHotstar reach consumers outside that core audience who want Indian and Asian entertainment without adding another expensive streaming subscription.
