Comcast Faces Deepening Broadband Losses Amid Intensifying Competition

Comcast expects to incur more than $1 billion in restructuring charges in the fourth quarter of 2026 as it reorganizes its business ahead of the planned NBCUniversal spinoff in mid-2027. The company lost 144,000 broadband customers in the third quarter, exceeding analysts’ estimate of 116,800 losses, as aggressive pricing from AT&T and smaller fiber providers intensified competition. Comcast is reportedly considering significant layoffs as it restructures its connectivity business. Meanwhile, its media division recorded a 13 percent increase in third-quarter revenue to $5.36 billion, supported by programming and streaming. Peacock generated $261 million in quarterly pretax profit, reversing a loss a year earlier.

HFCL Incorporates New Subsidiary to Expand Telecom Connectivity Business

HFCL has incorporated a new entity, HFCL Connectivity Systems, to support its telecommunications services business, according to the reported development. The move adds a dedicated corporate entity to the Indian telecommunications technology company’s operations, which include network equipment, optical fiber solutions and connectivity infrastructure. HFCL participates in telecom network deployment and broadband infrastructure projects, serving operators and other customers across the connectivity ecosystem. The incorporation could provide a separate structure for conducting relevant business activities, although the available report does not establish the subsidiary’s ownership details, capital investment, specific service portfolio or commercial targets. Further corporate disclosures would be needed to determine the entity’s precise operational responsibilities and expected contribution to HFCL’s business.

Africa Faces $10 Billion Spectrum Renewal Cycle as Mobile Connectivity Demand Grows

More than 200 mobile spectrum licenses worth over $10 billion are due for renewal across Africa over the next decade, according to GSMA Intelligence research published in October 2026. African mobile operators hold an average of approximately 570 MHz of spectrum below 7 GHz, compared with around 750 MHz elsewhere, while paying about 24 percent more per unit of spectrum relative to revenue. The report warns that high licensing costs and restrictive conditions could limit investment in network expansion and affordable connectivity. Although 4G networks cover approximately 83 percent of Africa’s population, only 28 percent use mobile internet. Spectrum reforms could extend 5G coverage to another 170 million people and generate over $120 billion in additional economic output by 2035.
