Cisco powers Telenet’s content navigation for cable TV users

Telecom Lead Europe: Telenet, a cable TV operator in Belgium, has selected the Cisco Videoscape Snowflake user interface to provide navigation of content and services across their platform.

As part of Telenet’s Yelo TV service, Cisco Videoscape Snowflake will provide a streamlined user interface across multiple devices, fulfilling the operator’s vision to enable subscribers to watch what they want, when they want and where they want — with an uninterrupted experience between devices.

Cisco’s acquisition of NDS’ software platform, customer segments and services model complement Cisco’s networked video offerings and accelerate the delivery of Videoscape, a Cisco platform that enables service providers and media companies to deliver next-generation video entertainment experiences. Through the NDS acquisition, Cisco has also expanded its global video footprint in new and emerging markets, further broadening its service provider presence and deepening customer relationships.

Jan Vorstermans, COO, Telenet, said: “With more content choice, our aim is to provide a simplified, feature-rich experience to complement our premium content offering.”

Its main competitors on the cable broadband internet market are Numericable and VOO in the Brussels region. Its other main competitor is Belgacom, leader of the Belgian DSL market, in the Flanders and Brussels regions.

Telenet acquired a large network of Wi-Fi hotspots in addition to its cable internet service through acquisition of Sinfilo.

Telenet also offers voice, data and internet services to its business customers under the brand name Telenet Solutions through its Optical Fiber Backbone, by acquisition of Codenet, which covers all Belgium and Luxembourg.

Cisco Videoscape Snowflake will enable Telenet users to intuitively navigate content and services across the platform — with a focus on providing easy access to linear programming. Users will have the ability to navigate into the ‘past’ or ‘future’ with easy navigation of both catch-up and on-demand content, all through a consistent Telenet-branded experience.

As the portal to the operator’s service, Cisco worked with Telenet to help ensure that the user interface will not only perform well, but also bring the operator’s brand to life through a unified look and feel.

Yves Padrines, vice president and general manager, EMEAR, Service Provider Video Technology Group, Cisco, said: “As the industry and the technology landscape grows, we risk losing subscribers’ attention in a complex mix of electronic program guides, apps and widgets. We strongly believe that the user experience must remain intuitive and central to the platform, whatever the device. Telenet is taking important steps to enhance their platform and position the customer at the centre of the service.”

At the recently concluded CES 2013, Cisco unveiled Videoscape Unity, its new and expanded Videoscape video services delivery platform. This new platform empowers service providers and media companies to deliver new intuitive and synchronized multiscreen video experiences. These include a multiscreen cloud digital video recorder (DVR), which enables consumers to restart shows, catch up on past programs, and play back DVR-captured content from anywhere, on any screen
