Adtran is enabling TPG to roll out Gigabit broadband services to more than 230,000 premises and over 2,000 buildings across Eastern Australia.

TPG, Australia’s second-largest telecommunications provider, wanted to offer Gigabit services to users as well as everyone else in its DSL services footprint by shifting from VDSL technology.

TPG Telecom reported service revenue of $4.389 billion (–4 percent) and EBITDA of $1.731 billion (–3 percent) for the financial year ended 31 December 2021.

TPG Telecom reported 80,000 customers on its 4G and 5G home broadband services at 31 December 2021. TPG Telecom is targeting to more than double fixed wireless base in 2022, by offering great value alternative to the NBN. The group’s total fixed customer base grew 1.2 percent to 2.22 million.

TPG’s network reached 85 percent of the population in 10 of Australia’s largest cities and regions with 5G, and rolling out more than 1,000 5G sites.

TPG earlier said network investment will accelerate in 2022 to enable delivery of a further 1,000-plus sites in 2022 as TPG expands 5G coverage in metro areas.

TPG is the first major telco in Australia to deploy Gfast and it selected Adtran’s latest Gfast technology to rapidly launch fast, competitive broadband service speeds that are 10 times faster than similar services offered by competitors in the region.

“The launch of Gfast has helped us offer some of the fastest broadband speeds available in Australia today and will be a game-changer for TPG’s wholesale business and customers,” said Jonathan Rutherford, Group Executive, Wholesale, Enterprise and Government at TPG Telecom Group.

Adtran’s Gfast VDSL coexistence technology enables Gfast-based services to support the delivery of symmetric and asymmetric Gigabit speeds even when delivered in coexistence with legacy VDSL2 services.

TPG can upgrade DSL customers to Gigabit services while allowing others to remain using their DSL services. Gfast technology pairs with Fiber-to-the-Building deployment architecture to speed time-to-market, eliminate resident disruption and lower the cost per Gigabit broadband connection.

“For TPG, our Gfast portfolio provides the capability to leverage its existing network to deliver ultra-broadband and Gigabit broadband speeds,” said Anthony Camilleri, Chief Technology Officer, APAC at Adtran.
