Alcatel-Lucent to power Telecom New Zealand’s 100G network

Telecom Lead Asia: Telecom New Zealand has tapped Alcatel-Lucent to deploy 100G optical network to more than 30 cities offering high-speed transport services.

The new network will support New Zealand government’s Ultra-Fast Broadband initiative. Announced in 2012, the aim of the project was to bring high-speed fiber-optic technology to homes, schools, hospitals and businesses.

The network will be live around the middle of 2013.

The IP and optical networking will enable Telecom New Zealand to address subscriber demand for business services such as high-definition video, high-speed Internet access, Voice-over-IP and the content delivery networks needed to enable movie processing and high-speed data links for Internet servers.

Telecom New Zealand Chief Technology Officer David Havercroft said the company selected Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G coherent optical transport network based on the best combination of technology capability, commercial terms, in-country support, and ability to deliver a large and critical project.

Andrew Miller, managing director of Alcatel-Lucent in New Zealand said the Ultra-Fast Broadband Initiative’ is a critical project that will benefit all of New Zealand.
