OnePlus to invest Rs 1,000 crore in Indian R&D facility

Smartphone maker OnePlus is investing Rs 1,000 crore in its first Indian R&D facility in Hyderabad.

The research facility will focus on software development, 5G and modifications to its Operating System (OS).

The facility, which will have 1,500 employees, will work on customisation of smartphone cameras for Indian customers, Vikas Agarwal, general manager, OnePlus India, said.

OnePlus earlier said it aims to expand its retail store presence across India. Shenzhen-based OnePlus, which sells a bulk of its phones through Amazon.com’s India unit, plans to have 10 retail stores by the second half of 2018.

OnePlus captured 36 percent share in premium smartphone market in Q4 2018 followed by Apple at 30 percent and Samsung at 26 percent.

Counterpoint’s analysis on the Indian premium smartphone segment over Rs 30,000 or $400 reveals that shipments reached its highest ever in a quarter in Q4 2018 and in a year – 2018. The premium segment grew 8 percent in 2018 and 16 percent in Q4 2018.
