5G smartphone forecast report for 2019 and 2023

Yesterday’s IDC report has revealed the market forecast in terms of the annual growth of 3G smartphone, 4G smartphone and 5G smartphone in 2019 and 2023.
IDC forecast on 5G smartphone market
3G smartphone shipment will reach 57.5 million in 2019 and 34.6 million in 2023.

4G smartphone shipment will reach 1330.6 million in 2019 and 1105.9 million in 2023.

5G smartphone shipment will reach 6.7 million in 2019 and 401.3 million in 2023.

The 3G smartphone share will be 4.1 percent in 2019 vs 4.1 percent in 2023.

The 4G smartphone share will be 95.4 percent in 2019 vs 71.7 percent in 2023.

The 5G smartphone share will be 0.5 percent in 2019 vs 26 percent in 2023.

The year 2019 is expected to witness a new high for innovation with the introduction of foldable devices and 5G smartphones.

While use cases for upgrading to a 5G device / service remain unclear, the adoption will begin to attain significant numbers after 2019.

IDC currently expects 5G smartphone shipments to account for roughly 1 out of every 4 smartphones shipped globally in 2023, said Sangeetika Srivastava, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers.

Worldwide smartphone volumes are forecast to fall by 0.8 percent in 2019 with volumes dipping to 1.39 billion.

The smartphone market will begin to pick up momentum this year with growth of 2.3 percent in the second half of the year. Over the long term, smartphone shipments are forecast to reach 1.54 billion units in 2023.
