Maxis’ 4G investment fails to lift revenue in Q1

Maxis 4G investment acceleratesMaxis in April said its revenue growth was flat in the first quarter of 2016 to reach RM 2,126 million or $544.7 million.

The Malaysian telecom network operator’s revenue did not grow in Q1 2016 despite investment in its 4G network.

Maxis made an investment of RM 159 million in Q1 2016 against RM 635 million in Q4 2015 and RM 135 million in Q1 2015 – primarily focusing on 4G network roll outs across Malaysia.

The telecom operator said its 4G network coverage reached 36 key towns in East Malaysia. Maxis also achieved 96 percent population coverage in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

Maxis has expanded 2G coverage to 96 percent from 95 percent, 3G coverage to 92 percent from 88 percent, 4G coverage to 74 percent from 36 percent and network modernization to 91 percent from 78 percent in the last 12 months.

LTE devices on Maxis’ 4G network doubled in the last 12 months to 3.25 million. Data volume from 2G, 3G and 4G services reached 52,000 TB in Q1 2016 from 50,000 TB in Q4 2015.

Pre-paid revenue of Maxis fell 3.5 percent to RM 1,015 million, while post-paid revenue increased marginally at 2.3 percent to RM 994 million.
