Telefonica Capex dips 20% in Q1 2014, mobile data revenue up 9%

Telecom carrier Telefonica today said its first quarter 2014 (Q1 2014) Capex declined 19.9 percent to 1,555 million euros. Its mobile data revenue rose 9 percent, despite losing 1 percent subscriber base.

The company said more than 69 percent of total investments devoted to business transformation and growth.

Telefonica focused on accelerating network modernization and simplification. Focusing on ultra-broadband infrastructure, its homes passed with fiber amounted to 5.8 million, around 80 percent more than in March 2013.

LTE sites deployment increased more than 3 times to more than 10,200 sites.

Telefonica Q1 2014 revenue increased 1.5 percent to 12,232 million euros. Telefonica said net income dipped 23.2 percent to 692 million euros.

Mobile data revenue rose 8.8 percent, now accounting for 40 percent of mobile service revenues against 38 percent in the first quarter of 2013. Non-SMS data revenues rose 23.6 percent, making 71 percent of total data revenues against 63 percent in the year-ago quarter.

Telefonica has lost 1 percent of its subscriber base to 313.1 million. Out of this, mobile accesses increased 3 percent to 247.5 million.

Deconsolidation of the business in Czech Republic and the sale of the residential business in the UK have impacted the subscriber growth in Q1.
