ZTE bags 13 orders for PON equipment and broadband terminals from China Telecom

Telecom equipment vendor ZTE on Thursday said it won 13 annual tenders for supplying passive optical network (PON) equipment and broadband terminals for 2013 from China Telecom.

In 2013, the Chinese telecom vendor bagged deals for 10Gigabit-EPON (10G-EPON) products in 14 provinces. The 2013 tenders by China Telecom exceeded the scale of 2012.

“ZTE will offer comprehensive services to China Telecom to support the growth of next-generation PON technology and intelligent optical distribution network (ODN), helping China Telecom build superior network infrastructure,” said Zhang Zhenhui, vice president at ZTE.

With 42 percent market share, ZTE has been ranked No.1 in passive optical networking (PON) shipments, according to Ovum.

ZTE also ranked first globally in shipments of optical network terminals (ONTs) and optical network units (ONUs) with 32 percent market share, after the company achieved shipments of more than 13 million lines.

Ovum’s data showed that ZTE attained market leadership while the total number of optical line terminals (OLT) ports shipped declined between 2011 and 2012.

In 2012, ZTE completed broadband terminal customization of over 200 versions in two months, providing support for FTTH network construction of China Telecom.

In July 2012, China Telecom tied up with Alcatel-Lucent to deploy IP technology. The Alcatel-Lucent technology will allow China Telecom to meet demand for video and data services for householders and consumers. In May 2012, China Telecom announced the expansion of
its broadband access network.
