Avoid Internet bill shocks: Verizon to offer Data Sense using Windows Phone 8 platform

Telecom Lead America: To avoid Internet bill shocks, American mobile giant Verizon will offer Data Sense on Microsoft Windows Phone 8 platform.

Microsoft on Monday said Verizon will be the first mobile operator to offer Data Sense in the U.S.

Data sense helps conserve data allowance by compressing Web images, deferring data tasks to free Wi-Fi and adjusting usage as users get closer to their plan limits.

Data Sense, one of the main features of Microsoft Windows Phone 8, shows how much data is used per app. As users approach limit, Data Sense notifies.

Data Sense will roll out to select mobile operators this holiday and additional partners next year.

Besides speed issues, data consumption confuses mobile users.

Several operators offer unlimited data package. But the definition of unlimited depends on telecom operators.

Internet speed is also a concern.

Recently, TelecomLead.com reported that the peak internet speed in India stood at 7.3Mbps, up 33 percent year over year. India lags behind global leader Hong Kong’s 49.2Mbps speed. The average Internet connection speed in India was above 1Mbps in the second quarter, a growth of nearly 5 percent quarter-over-quarter.

India has only 0.1 percent connections that can be qualified as “high broadband” (average speed of 10 Mbps), according to Akamai Technologies.

Broadband adoption rate in India continues to be on rise and witnessed change in excess of over 10 percent quarter-over-quarter. Akamai Technologies said the global average connection speed increased 13 percent to 3.0 Mbps from the first to second quarters of 2012, continuing a trend of strong growth.

The global average peak connection speed grew 44 percent year over year, including increases of 10 percent or more across all of the top 10 countries. Worldwide, 126 countries saw increases, six of which grew in excess of 100 percent between the second quarters of 2011 and 2012. In contrast, only eight countries saw year-over-year declines.
