Intel, Broadcom and Cisco propel 10 Gbps Ethernet controller and adapter market

Telecom Lead America: Intel, Broadcom and Cisco have
propelled the 10 Gbps Ethernet controller and adapter market.

The 10 Gbps Ethernet controller and adapter revenue grew
19 percent sequentially to reach more than $150 million during the second
quarter.

This is highest rate in more than two years.

Besides Cloud and High Performance Computing, enterprise
customers’ appetite for 10 Gbps is heating up, propelled by the launch of
Intel’s new server platform named Romley.

Sameh Boujelbene, senior analyst covering Controller and
Adapter at Dell’Oro Group, said the Romley ramp was significantly uneven
amongst the server manufacturers, leading to mixed results across the
controller and adapter vendors during the quarter.

According to the report, there was a major revenue and
port share shift between Broadcom, Cisco, Emulex and Intel.

For the first time, Intel recorded the highest port
shipments in the quarter, followed by Broadcom.

Dell’Oro Group expects quarterly share shifts to continue
as the Romley-based servers ramp up throughout the second half of the year.

The Controller and Adapter report tracks 10 Gbps
migration onto stand-alone vs. blade servers and gives details about daughter
card ports and ASPs as well as 10G Base-T shipments by form factor.
