The US wireless spectrum market is entering a new investment cycle as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) moves to open more than 1,000 MHz in the 12 GHz and 42 GHz bands for satellite broadband, while AT&T, T-Mobile and SpaceX expand or restructure their spectrum holdings.

The FCC plans to vote on the proposal on September 30, 2026. The additional spectrum could support high-speed satellite broadband for homes, aircraft and ships, alongside inter-satellite links and traffic-routing functions in satellite ground networks.
FCC Expands Spectrum for Satellite Broadband
The FCC’s latest initiative would make spectrum in the 12 GHz and 42 GHz bands available for expanded space-based communications.
Additional capacity could improve satellite network resilience and connectivity for aircraft, ships and vehicles while supporting new industrial and commercial applications.
The move follows an FCC decision in April 2026 to ease satellite spectrum power restrictions, enabling more intensive use of frequencies by satellite broadband providers such as Starlink. The changes could generate around $2 billion in economic benefits from increased broadband availability.
The FCC’s spectrum initiatives are becoming increasingly important as terrestrial telecom operators and satellite companies compete for frequencies capable of supporting next-generation connectivity.
AT&T Completes $23 Billion Spectrum Acquisition
AT&T has made one of the largest recent US spectrum investments, completing its approximately $23 billion acquisition of EchoStar spectrum licenses in July 2026.
The transaction added around 50 MHz of nationwide spectrum across more than 400 markets, including approximately 30 MHz of 3.45 GHz mid-band spectrum and 20 MHz of 600 MHz low-band spectrum.
AT&T had already deployed the acquired 3.45 GHz spectrum under a lease arrangement across nearly 23,000 cell sites covering more than 5,300 cities in 48 states. The operator said the additional capacity increased 5G download speeds by as much as 80 percent in deployment areas.
The AT&T spectrum acquisition and network expansion supports a broader network investment program under which the operator expects annual capital investment of $23 billion to $24 billion during 2026-2028.
T-Mobile Strengthens 600 MHz Position
T-Mobile is also optimizing its spectrum portfolio. In August 2026, the operator completed a transaction with Grain Management that transferred its 800 MHz spectrum portfolio in exchange for $2.9 billion in cash plus Grain’s 600 MHz licenses.
The additional low-band spectrum strengthens T-Mobile’s coverage layer alongside its extensive 2.5 GHz mid-band spectrum, which provides much of the capacity supporting its 5G network.
The transaction illustrates how US operators are increasingly balancing low-band frequencies for coverage with mid-band spectrum for higher network capacity.
SpaceX Invests Billions in Spectrum for Direct-to-Cell
SpaceX is emerging as another major participant in the US spectrum market through its agreements with EchoStar.
EchoStar agreed to sell AWS-4 and H-block spectrum licenses to SpaceX for approximately $17 billion, including up to $8.5 billion in cash and $8.5 billion in SpaceX stock.
SpaceX plans to use the frequencies for its next-generation Starlink Direct-to-Cell network.
The companies subsequently expanded their relationship with another approximately $2.6 billion transaction involving unpaired AWS-3 spectrum.
The SpaceX-EchoStar spectrum agreement demonstrates how satellite operators are acquiring spectrum traditionally associated with terrestrial wireless networks to deliver connectivity directly to mobile devices.
FCC AWS-3 Auction Raises $3.57 Billion
Spectrum auctions are also returning as an important source of capacity for US operators.
The FCC’s 2026 AWS-3 Auction 113 generated $3.573 billion in gross proceeds after 72 bidding rounds. Seven bidders won all 200 licenses offered.
The frequencies cover portions of the 1695-1710 MHz, 1755-1780 MHz and 2155-2180 MHz bands.
The FCC is also preparing for additional mid-band spectrum availability, including at least 100 MHz of Upper C-Band spectrum required to be auctioned by July 2027.
That spectrum could be particularly important for AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile as they expand 5G capacity and prepare their networks for future 6G services.
US Spectrum Competition Moves Beyond 5G
The FCC’s latest proposal shows that US spectrum competition is expanding beyond conventional mobile networks.
AT&T’s $23 billion EchoStar spectrum acquisition, SpaceX’s approximately $19.6 billion of announced EchoStar spectrum transactions, T-Mobile’s $2.9 billion-plus spectrum exchange, and the FCC’s $3.57 billion AWS-3 auction demonstrate the growing strategic value of wireless frequencies.
Opening another 1,000+ MHz for satellite broadband could accelerate this convergence, allowing terrestrial and satellite networks to provide increasingly integrated connectivity across homes, smartphones, aircraft, ships and vehicles.
For US telecom operators, spectrum strategy is therefore shifting from simply expanding 5G capacity toward building networks capable of combining terrestrial mobile, direct-to-device satellite and future 6G connectivity.
