Ofcom Fines adult site 8579 LLC £1.35 mn Over Missing Age Checks Under Online Safety Act

The UK communications regulator Ofcom has imposed a £1.35 million fine on adult content provider 8579 LLC for failing to implement mandatory age verification measures required under the UK’s Online Safety Act. The regulator has also levied an additional £50,000 penalty for the company’s failure to respond to a legally binding information request.

Age Assurance Failures Trigger Major Penalty

Under the Online Safety Act, websites hosting pornographic material must deploy highly effective age assurance systems to prevent children from accessing explicit content. These requirements came into force in July 2025, marking a significant tightening of online safety rules in the UK.

Ofcom launched investigations into dozens of adult websites, prioritizing platforms with large user bases. 8579 LLC was among the companies placed under scrutiny.

Ofcom said 8579 LLC had failed to implement robust age checks in compliance with the law. As a result, the regulator has ordered the company to immediately introduce effective age verification measures or face a daily penalty of £1,000 until compliance is achieved.

Additional £50,000 Fine for Ignoring Information Request

In addition to the primary penalty, Ofcom fined 8579 LLC £50,000 for failing to respond to a statutory information request. Regulators rely on accurate and timely responses from companies to monitor compliance and enforce safety obligations.

Ofcom warned that it will impose a further daily fine of £250 for up to 60 days, or until the company provides the required information, whichever comes first.

Enforcement Focus on Child Protection Online

George Lusty, Director of Enforcement at Ofcom, emphasized the regulator’s firm stance on protecting minors from online harm.

“We’ve been clear that adult sites must deploy robust age checks to protect children in the UK from seeing porn. Those that fail to do this – or ignore legally binding requests from us – should expect to face fines,” he said.

Earlier, Ofcom has fined Kick Online Entertainment SA £800,000 for failing to implement mandatory age verification checks to prevent children from accessing pornographic content. The breach occurred between 25 July and 29 December 2025. Ofcom confirmed that the company has introduced an age assurance method deemed capable of being highly effective.

Ofcom also imposed an additional £30,000 fine on the company for failing to respond properly to legally binding information requests.

Suzanne Cater, Director of Enforcement at Ofcom, said robust age checks on adult platforms are non negotiable and warned that companies failing to meet their obligations or cooperate with the regulator will face strong enforcement measures.

Separately, Ofcom has issued provisional decisions against Youngtek Solutions, 4chan, and Im.ge for potential non compliance with the Online Safety Act. The regulator has also widened investigations into four additional porn companies operating 20 adult sites over concerns about inadequate responses to statutory information requests.

Strengthened Online Safety Compliance

The enforcement action signals Ofcom’s intent to actively monitor and penalize non compliant platforms under the Online Safety Act. The new regime represents one of the UK’s most significant digital regulatory overhauls, aimed at strengthening online child protection and ensuring accountability across digital platforms.

With financial penalties and daily fines now being enforced, adult content providers operating in the UK face mounting regulatory pressure to adopt advanced age verification technologies and comply fully with statutory requirements.
