Broadband CPE market grew 2.5 percent in 2011

Telecom Lead India: The broadband CPE market grew 2.5
percent in 2011 y-o-y from 2010 with cable and fiber equipment growing at 12
percent and 15.5 percent, respectively.

 

The broadband CPE market continues to consolidate through
mergers and acquisitions with an increasing focus on regional competition
through tailored portfolio of products for key regions.

 

TP-link expanded at a phenomenal rate in 2011 with close
to 10 percent increase in market share while shipping 35 million DSL products.
It was followed by Netgear and Huawei in total broadband CPE unit shipments,
according to ABI Research.

 

ZTE, Huawei, and TP-link continued to grow aggressively, driven
by growth in China, as well as growing presence in worldwide emerging broadband
markets of the rest of Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.

 

Netgear and D-link continued to grow marginally through
2011, while Cisco and Technicolor lost to increasing competition worldwide,
including in their North America and Western European strongholds
(respectively). These markets are increasingly turning into equipment
replacement markets with mature broadband penetration.

 

Increases in multiple users and devices per household are
contributing to operator’s preference for routers and gateways (rather than
simpler modems) worldwide. Service providers are inclined to offer higher
computing power at the customer premise, especially in regions with higher ARPU
rates. The residential gateway market owing to future proofing the customer
premise equipment along with scope for provisioning additional services over time.
