Hungary’s East-West Gate Intermodal Terminal (EWG) announced the completion of the smart railway hub in Hungarybuilt on a 5G private network.
The project will be handed over on 23rd March 2022, with trial operation scheduled on the same day.
Situated in Fenyeslitke, Hungary, the smart railway hub is Europe’s largest intelligent multi-modal railway hub and also the first railway port in Europe to use a 5G private network.
Total cost of the project is 82 million EUR, according to EWG.
The network will be built in the East-West Gate terminal to serve high-tech operations. With low latency, high uplink bandwidth for camera images and high reliability of 99.99%, the network will provide full remote control for all cranes from one control room.
The project also includes collaboration with British telecommunications operator Vodafone and Huawei.
Situated in a strategic location, Fenyeslitke terminal has been identified as an east-west gateway for the New Silk Road, to open a cargo transit route from China through Russia, Ukraine, and Hungary. The terminus is also compatible with normal and broad gauge railway tracks.
The project will utilize theMaxWhere Terminal 5.0 system developed in Hungary, making it the first fully digital multimodal rail terminal. The 3D operational interface will collect, process, and display real-time information from all subsystems of the logistics center. The 3D terminal management software will be able to keep in touch with customers online and track the status of the containers on the road in real time, with 3D visualization.
The East-West Gate terminal is also a zero-emission project, and has been found operational 100% without emissions during test operations. Temperature, cooling and heating of buildings are provided by geothermal heat pumps. The site is powered by 2MW solar panels, which already exceeds the energy demand of the terminal. High-capacity battery packs are provided to store the energy. Railway equipment and locomotives are diesel-electric while the movement of personnel will be facilitated exclusively by electric cars.
Huawei is providing the solar inverters as well as Lithium battery based energy storage solutions.
The project has an initial loading capacity of 15,000 square meters, which is planned to be expanded to a loading capacity of approximately 500,000 square meters. And the max. capacity reaches 1 million TEU per year.
