Vodafone 5G network goes live in 243 cities in 10 markets in Europe

Vodafone today revealed that the world’s second largest mobile operator has launched 5G network in 243 cities in 10 markets in Europe.

Vodafone switched off 3G network in Germany on 1 July 2021, with spectrum re-assigned to increase the capacity, speed and coverage of our 4G network, with 4G being up to 70 percent more energy efficient than 3G. Vodafone Germany’s 4G network now covers 99 percent of the population and 5G network is available to more than 25 million people.

Vodafone also launched Europe’s first 5G standalone network in April 2021. Standalone 5G enables higher speeds, enhanced reliability and ultra-low latency, in addition to using 20 percent less energy on customers’ devices.

Vodafone does not reveal more details related to 5G investment.

In Africa, Vodafone is the leading provider of mobile data and mobile payment services. Vodafone has 182 million mobile customers in 8 markets which represent 40 percent of Africa’s total gross domestic product.

Vodafone covers 67 percent of the population in the African markets in which it operates with 4G services.

Vodafone’s M-Pesa financial services platform processed almost 4.5 billion transactions, an increase of 45 percent year-on-year, in Q2. The VodaPay super-app will be launched in South Africa, with over 70 merchants already joining the eco-system.

Vodafone’s quarterly revenue for June 30, 2021 increased 5.7 percent to €11.1 billion, supported by service revenue growth in Europe and Africa, and a recovery in smartphone sales.
