Telenor launches 5G pilot in Scandinavia

Telenor has started its 5G pilot in Scandinavia as part of the telecom operator’s strategy to roll out 5G network in Norway.

The telecom operator is offering 5G testing opportunities to both residential and business customers.

Residents of Kongsberg will be the first to test Telenor’s 5G technology till summer 2019, the company said on Thursday. Initially, five families will test broadband and TV services delivered via 5G in their homes.

Several Norwegian businesses including Coop, The Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation and Applied Autonomy will also test Telenor 5G.

“We are starting in Kongsberg and will expand to offer more pilot locations in 2019, while gradually preparing for the commercial roll out of 5G in 2020,” said Bjorn Ivar Moen, acting CEO of Telenor Norway.

Speedtest from Ookla says Telenor now has the fastest mobile network in the world. Telenor launched 4G in 2012 followed by 4G+.
