Sunrise steps up investment in 5G Standalone (5G SA)

Sunrise is the first provider in Switzerland to introduce 5G Standalone (5G SA), a major advancement in mobile technology.

Sunrise 5G network

Unlike the current 5G Non-Standalone (5G NSA), which relies on a 4G core, 5G SA operates on a fully dedicated 5G network. This brings a host of benefits for both residential and business customers.

Key Benefits for Customers

Improved Indoor Coverage – With 5G SA, the low 900 MHz frequency can reach farther, while the 3700 MHz range delivers better performance, ensuring stronger signal reception indoors.

Longer Battery Life – Devices no longer need dual connections to 4G and 5G, reducing power consumption and extending battery life by 10–20 percent per charge.

Real-Time Responsiveness – Lower latency ensures near-instantaneous data transmission, enhancing applications such as cloud gaming, augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR), and live video streaming.

Stronger Security – Enhanced identity management and encryption make 5G SA the most secure mobile communication technology available.

Better Call Stability – With Voice over New Radio (VoNR), voice calls are directly handled by the 5G network, allowing for simultaneous high-speed data and voice connections without interference.

Transformational Benefits for Businesses

Massive IoT Connectivity – 5G SA allows more devices to connect simultaneously, making it ideal for smart factories, logistics, and industrial automation.

Network Slicing – Businesses can have dedicated, customized virtual networks with guaranteed speeds, latency, and security, essential for industries like healthcare, broadcasting, and emergency services.

Critical Business Applications – Industries relying on ultra-low latency and high reliability, such as autonomous vehicles, drone operations, and smart city infrastructure, will benefit from 5G SA.

Sustainability & Efficiency – 5G SA consumes less energy per transmitted data unit, reducing environmental impact and helping businesses achieve sustainability targets.

Laying the Foundation for the Future

“For us, 5G standalone is the foundation that will allow us to develop 5G offerings that enable new communication & entertainment experiences, and new business solutions,” says Elmar Grasser, CTO of Sunrise.

By leading the deployment of 5G Standalone, Sunrise is ensuring that its customers and businesses stay ahead in an increasingly digital world. While it will take time for all devices to fully support 5G SA, this investment positions Sunrise at the forefront of Switzerland’s next-generation connectivity revolution.
