Nokia flaunts Cloud Era, IoT and 5G innovations

Nokia
Telecom network maker Nokia has hosted the India Innovation Day 2016 and put to display its innovations in Networks for Cloud Era, IoT and 5G mobile technology.
Under Networks for Cloud Era, Nokia emphasized on the pros of virtualization and automation with less hardware and its resultant effect on efficiency, quality, innovation and business opportunities. Nokia is trying to merge connectivity through its joint offering of mobile, fixed, IP and optical networks.
The company mentioned that IoT will become a reality for smart cities, smart homes and public safety. The demos conveyed how large scale connectivity can be managed and lag can be avoided with the aid of IoT applications, which can be created securely.
5G trials in India

Nokia has also initiated a discussion with Indian telecom network operators to begin the trials of 5G networks. The company already has testing processes for its fifth generation network technology on the go with international telecom enterprises like Verizon in the U.S., SK Telecom in Korea and NTT Docomo in Japan.
Nokia claims that the 5G network has the potential to deliver a speed of 100 megabit per second speed for home connections with a capability to handle 1000 times more data traffic by the time of its estimated commercialization in 2020.
Nokia Networks is part of the Telecommunications Standards Development Society of India, which is putting efforts in developing 5G, related to which the discussion with telecom operators to trigger 5G trials took place. Notwithstanding the fact that India is still undergoing the initial stages of a full-scale deployment of 4G technology based mobile voice and data services and large parts of the country are yet to be covered under the high-speed data and voice services.
Talking about 5G networks, Nokia Networks head of Mobile Broadband Milivoj Vela said on the sidelines of the event on Tuesday that 5G will focus on data services while voice calls will be facilitated through 4G technology.
“It will be used for purposes beyond voice and data communications carried by people today. It will has less than 1 millisecond latency that will be used by machines for quick action like for to stop in case it identifies any obstacle, surgery from remote location etc. Discussion about spectrum (at global level) in which 5G will operate will finish by 2019. Commercial 5G deployment will start in 2020. Then you will see 100 mbps guaranteed speed everywhere,” Vela added.
He said that 5G will operate in the spectrum band above 6000 Mhz and the technology is planned to be launched in phases.
“One cell (mobile antenna) in 5G will be able to handle 1000 times more data traffic in 2020 compared to data traffic in 2010. We have already achieved 1 million devices connected to single cell site and 30 GBPS speed on 73 Ghz band in lab,” Vela said.
Currently, the spectrum band between 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz is being put to use for mobile services in India. Wifi services are generally utilized in the range of 2.4 GHz to 5.9 GHz.
“Already 4G is taking voice calling to high definition voice calls and voice call cannot be better than this. 5G will about high quality data experience. It will enhance telepresence (web conferencing) to a level where one will not feel the difference if a person is in room or on telepresence,” Vela said.

The Finnish telecom company also put up a demonstration of some of its innovations intended to improve the high speed network experience. The major ones were:

Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi:  Nokia developed cloud-based, carrier-grade Wi-Fi that provides gigabit wireless performance and eases deployment. It allows mobile operators to seamlessly integrate Wi-Fi with their existing networks alongside allowing service providers without licensed spectrum to run a Wi-Fi service that takes advantage of mobile edge computing and analytics to deliver advanced context-based services.
Nokia AirScale Radio Access:  Nokia’s next generation AirScale Radio Access  will enable operators to use Nokia AirScale Radio Access to economically meet future innovations including the Internet of Things, virtual reality, augmented reality, factories of the future and other advanced scenarios such as video that demand extreme performance. The first demonstration of Nokia AirScale Radio Access live, with 5G-ready air interface is put up at Mobile World Congress 2016.
NB-IOT: This will result in increase in the range of coverage in rural and inbuilding environments. Live tracking demonstration showed the superior coverage of NB-IoT when compared to the conventional LTE. NB-IoT is being standardized in the LTE specifications of 3GPP Rel.13 (LTE-Advanced Pro).
Nuage Networks: This demo showed the change brought by networking branches differently, in which sites can be brought up, and network services can be added and modified by users as per requirement, alongside following the security and policies of the network provider. The Nuage Networks by Nokia VNS solution is a software-defined network infrastructure which lies constant amongst datacenters in private & public clouds and extends to remote locations anywhere.
Smart Home: This demo showed how network providers (telecoms, cable MSOs, Community Broadband providers) can modify the Residential gateway which is already available present in each home and expand their services offer into the new domain of Smart/Connected Home.
Smart city: This demo from TB showcases few applications of IoT put to effect in Smart Parking, Smart Metering and Smart Lighting
IoT- Scale Monetize and secure: This demo showed how to scale the network and create horizontal solutions for IOT. Protect and assure network, devices, apps and data. Monetize connectivity and expand service across IOT ecosystem.
IoT use cases: This demonstration displayed the possible use of new technologies to enable new IoT business models. The market trial concepts that were demonstrated were a Connected Service Vehicle, Smart Bus Shelter and a Smart University Campus.
