Ericsson Mobility Report 2026: 5G Subscriptions Reach 3.1 bn as 5G SA, FWA and AI-Driven Traffic Reshape Telecom Networks

Global 5G adoption crossed a major milestone in the first quarter of 2026, with worldwide 5G mobile subscriptions surpassing 3 billion and reaching 3.1 billion, according to the latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report 2026.

Ericsson Mobility Report June 2026

The telecom industry is also witnessing rapid growth in 5G Standalone (SA) deployments, network slicing services, fixed wireless access (FWA), and AI-driven mobile traffic patterns that are reshaping network infrastructure strategies through 2031.

Ericsson revealed that operators added 162 million new 5G subscriptions during the first quarter of 2026 alone. The company forecasts that global 5G subscriptions will more than double from 3.1 billion today to 6.4 billion by the end of 2031, making 5G the dominant mobile connectivity technology worldwide.

The report shows that 390 communications service providers have launched commercial 5G services globally, while more than 90 operators have already deployed 5G Standalone networks. By the end of 2025, 5G networks were carrying 48 percent of total mobile data traffic, and this figure is projected to rise sharply to 85 percent by 2031.

Ericsson Mobility Report 2026 does not reveal investment related information.

Regional adoption remains particularly strong. Western Europe, North America, North East Asia, and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are expected to achieve 5G subscription penetration rates close to or above 90 percent by 2031.

5G Network Slicing Moves Into Mainstream Commercialization

One of the fastest-growing areas in the telecom sector is commercial network slicing based on 5G Standalone architecture. Ericsson noted that the number of differentiated connectivity offerings increased from 65 in the November 2025 edition of the report to 84 commercial services globally in June 2026.

These services enable operators to offer guaranteed quality of service by dedicating specific network slices to enterprise, industrial, and mission-critical applications. The increase from 65 to 84 offerings signals a transition from early experimentation to broader commercial adoption.

Ericsson CTO Erik Ekudden said the industry is moving toward a future where physical AI and autonomous systems will generate new connectivity requirements. Distributed AI agents operating across devices, vehicles, factories, and cities will increasingly rely on intelligent 5G networks capable of delivering guaranteed performance levels.

5G Fixed Wireless Access Gains Momentum

The report highlights accelerating growth in 5G Fixed Wireless Access as operators seek new revenue opportunities beyond traditional mobile services.

The share of FWA providers delivering services over 5G networks increased to 71 percent in 2026, up significantly from 57 percent a year earlier. This represents the largest annual increase in four years.

Meanwhile, speed-based pricing models continue gaining popularity. Around 57 percent of FWA providers now offer speed-tiered tariff plans, compared with 51 percent in June 2025. These plans help operators target different customer segments and improve monetization.

New 5G FWA launches have been recorded across Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Morocco, Taiwan, Türkiye, and Vietnam. Adoption remains strongest in North America, Nordic countries, GCC markets, and selected Asian nations.

Ericsson noted that the business model is proving successful in both highly developed fiber markets, where more than 95 percent of homes are fiber connected, and in low-ARPU markets such as India. However, adoption remains relatively limited in Latin America, Africa, and parts of Southeast Asia despite significant long-term growth potential.

Uplink Traffic Growth Surpasses Downlink

Changing user behavior and AI-enabled applications are driving a significant shift in mobile traffic patterns.

Ericsson’s network measurements show that 43 out of 55 service providers recorded faster uplink traffic growth than downlink traffic. Additionally, 17 out of 55 operators experienced uplink growth rates that were more than 1.5 times higher than downlink growth.

The trend is being fueled by increasing use of video collaboration applications, user-generated content sharing, cloud storage services, and real-time communication platforms.

Ericsson’s modeling suggests AI-powered services could dramatically accelerate this shift. By 2031, AI-generated traffic could make uplink volumes three times higher or more compared with 2025 levels.

Mobile Data Traffic Surges 22 Percent

Global network traffic growth continues to exceed expectations. Total network data traffic, including both mobile and fixed wireless access connections, increased 22 percent year-on-year during the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

Ericsson attributed the stronger-than-expected growth primarily to continued mobile data consumption increases in India and North America, two of the world’s largest telecom markets.

6G Development Accelerates Ahead of 2030 Launches

The report also highlights growing industry focus on 6G development. Standardization work is now underway, with early discussions centered on integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), seamless integration between terrestrial and satellite networks, improved energy efficiency, and AI-native network architectures.

Ericsson expects the first implementable 6G specifications to be finalized by late 2028 or early 2029. Commercial 6G services are anticipated to begin around 2030, with early deployments likely in the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, and GCC countries.

As telecom operators expand 5G Standalone deployments, network slicing capabilities, and AI-ready infrastructure, the Ericsson Mobility Report 2026 indicates that the industry is entering a new phase where connectivity becomes an intelligent platform supporting autonomous systems, enterprise applications, and next-generation digital services.
