BT to launch 5G services in 20 towns on Friday

BT will switch on its 5G network to offer 5G services in more than 20 towns and cities on Friday.

BT’s 5G will be available in UK towns / cities such as Cardiff, Bimingham, Belfast, Bristol, Coventry, Leicester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, Sheffield, Leeds and Newcastle.

BT promised to deliver 5G to 50 additional towns and cities by summer 2020, according to media reports.

BT’s mobile brand EE, the market leader in the UK, switched on Britain’s first commercial 5G services in May. Rival Vodafone followed with its own 5G network in July. Vodafone also launched 5G in several European nations.

Other UK networks including O2 from Telefonica, Sky and Three are all expected to fire up their own 5G networks by 2021, according to media reports.

BT said business customers and consumers signed up to broadband and mobile package BT Plus would be the first to be offered 5G, which will require a handset from a range including the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, OnePlus 7 Pro and Huawei Mate 20.

The company said on Wednesday it would launch a new converged product called Halo next month that will offer unlimited data and calls on mobile and fixed lines.
