Reliance Jio to merge long distance services arm

Indian telecom service provider Reliance Jio Infocomm, the 4G business of Reliance Industries (RIL) has moved the Bombay High Court seeking approval for merging its national and international long distance services arm Infotel Telecom with itself.

It has also approached the Department of Telecom (DoT) for setting up an international Internet services gateway required for connecting with overseas networks.

In a letter to DoT, RJIL said: “In view of RJIL holding Unified License having authorization of all services including NLD (National Long Distance) and ILD (International Long Distance) services, we wish to carry out NLD and ILD business under single license. It is proposed to consolidate ITL (Infotel Telecom) and RJIL into a single company through the process of amalgamation.”

ITL has filed company scheme petition with Bombay High Court for seeking approval of amalgamation, RJIL has said in the letter.

“We, RJIL and ITL, hereby notify top to the DoT our scheme of amalgamation of companies…is in compliance with DoT guidelines for transfer and merger of various categories of telecommunication service licenses,” it said.

The company has also approached DoT to set up international Internet gateway and Mumbai and Chennai after which it will be able to provide Internet services in the country.

RJIL has requested DoT for completing security process after which the gateway can be made operational. The security process includes setting up of Internet interception and monitoring system and its successful access to government security agencies under Ministry of Home Affairs.

The company is expected to launch services in the July- September quarter this year.
