Mohammad Abu Bakar Siddque has replaced Bose as the telecom secretary and Bose joined as the new BTRC Chairman.

Siddique was the Chairman of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation before the Ministry of Public Administration on Sept 4 issued an order appointing him as the new telecom secretary.

Bose will head the telecom regulator of the country for three years.

The post fell vacant following the death of Zia Ahmed on September 10.

Sunil Kanti Bose, who joined civil service in 1979 after completing his education in Zoology from the Dhaka University, served as the chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and the director of Bangladesh National Scientific and Technical Documentation Centre (BANSDOC).

Bangladesh, an emerging telecom market in Asia, has around 95.528 million mobile phone subscribers at the end of August. The mobile subscribers of cell phone operators — Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi, Airtel, Citycell, Teletalk — stood at 39.803 million, 25.743 million, 20.144 million, 6.784 million, 1.683 million and 1.367 million respectively by the end of August.

According to a recent news report in TelecomLead.com, Teletalk launched 3G services in the country. Teletalk is the first operator in Bangladesh to launch third generation mobile services. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi telecommunications ministry, which is finalizing the draft of the 3G guideline, will award licenses to run 3G mobile services through an open auction.
