Sprint adds 967,000 subscribers in latest quarter

American wireless carrier Sprint – owned by SoftBank of Japan, added 967,000 subscribers in the third fiscal quarter of 2014.

For comparison, T-Mobile US added 2.1 million net customers in its latest quarter i.e. the fourth quarter of 2014. Verizon Communications said wireless customer growth was strong throughout fourth quarter of 2014.

In 2014, T-Mobile added 8.3 million net customers, an 89 percent increase from the prior year.

AT&T, the main rival on Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile US, is keeping mum on its latest wireless additions.

During the third quarter, Sprint said its platform net additions totaled 967,000 including postpaid net additions of 30,000, prepaid net additions of 410,000 and wholesale net additions of 527,000.

Sprint said postpaid phone gross additions increased 20 percent for the quarter year-over-year.

Postpaid gross additions was the highest in three years, said Sprint. The company said the percentage of prime customers was the highest on record.

“Sprint’s first priority is a return to customer growth and our results during the last quarter show we are on the right track,” said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, who joined the company in August.

Since August, Sprint has launched a number of simplified price plans and promotions including the Cut Your Bill in Half Event that cut in half the monthly rate plan for Verizon and AT&T customers who switch to Sprint.

Sprint will provide its full financial results for the third fiscal quarter of 2014 in February. Hope AT&T will also announce its latest wireless subscribers shortly.
