By Telecom Lead Team: Jasper Wireless, a provider of
connected devices platform for machine-to-machine (M2M) and consumer
electronics, has entered into an agreement with NTT DOCOMO to wirelessly
connect M2M and consumer electronics devices across Japan.
Under the partnership, the Jasper Wireless platform will
provide DOCOMO with the applications and services necessary to accelerate
market entry of new categories of connected devices on its network.
This is a good win for Jasper – it shows
that it continues to win Tier One operators as customers. This adds a major AP player
to its stable, confirming its status as a fully global M2M platform player.
This is especially important as some of the own-platform operators are
beginning to win some big global deals,” said Jeremy Green, principal analyst
at Ovum.
It’s also worth noting that this a return to the M2M
field for DoCoMo, which more or less re-organized its M2M unit out of existence
back in 2004, despite a great deal of initial enthusiasm for M2M that included
a wide range of consumer-oriented product concepts. Consumer electronics has
been the M2M dog that has so far refused to bark, with huge forecasts proving
slow to materialise. No-one could fail to notice that many of the global
consumer electronics vendors are Japanese, and the re-entry of DoCoMo into the
market could be the shot in the arm that this segment of the M2M market needs,”
Green added.
In addition, Jasper will enable DOCOMO to profitably
connect and manage a range of embedded wireless devices.
Market success depends on finding the right business
models that can use M2M devices with embedded connectivity to serve different
verticals and consumers globally.
Jasper Wireless’ ability extends to a variety of M2M
connections including but not limited to telematics, consumer electronics and
m-health.
In working with DOCOMO, Jasper Wireless is partnering
with not only the market leader in Japan, but also with an organization with a
track record in opening up new markets. We’re delighted that DOCOMO has
selected Jasper’s connected devices platform to deploy and manage their
connected devices profitably and at scale,” said Cindy Patterson, executive
vice president, worldwide sales, Jasper Wireless.
Jasper Wireless develops the applications and services
that support highly flexible business models as well as the automation of
operational processes.
Jasper’s services include custom device provisioning,
instant activation, real-time diagnostic tools and detailed billing and usage
reports, ensuring a superior out-of-box end-user experience.
With this partnership, NTT DOCOMO has entered into a
growing list of other Jasper Wireless operator partners including AT&T,
América Móvil, Telefónica, VimpelCom, KPN, SingTel, Telstra, Rogers, CSL and
more.
Last month, NTT DOCOMO and Accenture announced that they will begin offering to
DOCOMO-affiliated content providers a remote, self-verification operational
testing service for applications developed for smartphones.
