SK Telecom, a leading 4G operator in Korea, will launch Smart Shopper, an omni-channel platform built with barcode scanning and NFC technologies, to enhance customers’ shopping experience.

Retail shoppers can read a barcode scanning device instead of a shopping cart and add items to their virtual shopping carts. At Order Viewer, a touch-screen device installed within the store, customers can check and edit items in their shopping carts by placing the device on a dongle.

To purchase the items, customers can walk up to the self-checkout counter, instead of the existing POS checkout counter, and touch their device to confirm selected items, the total amount and make payment. Items can be delivered directly to their homes.

Retailers will benefit because they can reduce the size of their stores and avoid keeping large stocks at stores.

SK Telecom also announced its Smart Credit Card platform that integrates plastic cards into one electronic card embedded with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and battery. Smart Credit Card, which has touch-sensitive buttons and a display panel, can connect to users’ smartphone via BLE and register or unregister cards and receive an automatic alert on their smartphone in case of card loss.

Smart Credit Card utilizes the existing infrastructure of credit card member stores unlike mobile cards and NFC-based payment that requires member stores to set up a separate payment infrastructure.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom developed Smart Stamp Platform, a BLE-based electronic stamp service that allow retailers, including coffee shops and restaurants, to stamp directly on the customer’s smartphone to reward repeat visits.

The company said Shopkick commerce platform connects consumers to offline stores via smartphones. The BLE beacons supported platform provides product and discount information of stores located near them, and gives points to those who scan barcodes on store items or make a payment.
