How T-Mobile became second largest telecom operator beating AT&T

T-Mobile US CEO Mike Sievert has explained how the second largest telecom operator has become the growth leader in wireless business in the United States.

T-Mobile US became the second largest wireless operator – beating AT&T – during the second quarter of 2020.

T-Mobile US has 100 million mobile phone customers on its mobile network — after reporting record-high postpaid net additions.

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said: “Customers are choosing T-Mobile in record numbers because we are the only ones that can deliver this combination of value and experience with a true 5G network that is available to customers in every single state.”

T-Mobile added 2,035,000 new mobile phone customers in Q3 2020. The total customer base increased to 100.4 million.

Postpaid net customer additions were 1,979,000 in Q3 2020. Postpaid phone net customer additions were 689,000 in Q3 2020. Postpaid phone churn was 0.90%. Postpaid other net customer additions were 1,290,000 in Q3 2020, leading the industry and nearly double Verizon and AT&T combined. Prepaid net customer additions were 56,000 in Q3 2020 and prepaid churn was 2.86 percent.

For comparison, AT&T added more than 5 million wireless connections during the third quarter. AT&T added more than 1 million postpaid connections, including 645,000 postpaid phones. AT&T added 245,000 prepaid connections, including 131,000 prepaid phone net adds. Postpaid phone churn was 0.69 percent during the third quarter.

T-Mobile’s service revenues increased to $14.1 billion in Q3 2020, driven by the Sprint merger and customer growth. Total revenues increased to $19.3 billion in Q3 2020, driven by the Sprint merger and customer growth.

Net income increased to $1.3 billion in Q3 2020. Merger-related costs were $288 million in Q3 2020.

T-Mobile’s 5G network covers 270 million people in 8,300 cities and towns across 1.4 million square miles. T-Mobile’s 5G network is 3.5x more than Verizon and 2x more than AT&T.

T-Mobile’s Home Internet Pilot service has reached parts of 450 cities and towns, laying the groundwork for a nationwide 5G commercial launch of fixed wireless broadband.
