AT&T makes investment in IP technology to upgrade 9-1-1 networks

American telecom network operator AT&T announced its investment in IP technology to upgrade its older 9-1-1 networks to assist 9-1-1 agencies.

AT&T ESInet service provides network with call routing services for 9-1-1 agencies to ensure public safety in the U.S.

AT&T said its ESInet is designed to accelerate the adoption of 9-1-1 call routing meeting the latest National Emergency Number Association (NENA) i3 standards. Agencies can easily manage 9-1-1 calls and automatically handle call overflow between Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) and disaster recovery locations.

The current networks handle voice calls. AT&T ESInet can handle texts and will support pictures and video in the future. First responders, such as law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and Emergency Medical Response Services (EMS), can receive detailed information quickly using the IP network.

AT&T ESInet will be the leading 9-1-1 offer in 21 states. PSAPs can receive IP calls in a secure fashion and reduce deployment cycle times. The solution is planned to work with most PSAP call handling equipment.

Jim Bugel, vice president, AT&T Public Safety Solutions, said: “The complexity of NextGen 9-1-1 call routing has been a large barrier to adoption. AT&T ESInet is a nationwide service that will simplify the transition to 9-1-1 IP call routing services.”
