Telecom operators’ SBC strategies: Infonetics

A number of telecom operators are expected to deploy session border controllers (SBCs) in a virtualized environment (NFV) over the next 2 years, said Infonetics Research.

85 percent of those surveyed rate signaling protocol normalization and interworking and session capacity/scalability as important SBC product features.

Respondents’ rankings of vendors across a range of criteria place Huawei and Sonus Networks ahead of Genband but well below Oracle / Acme Packet in most categories.

Service providers will continue migrating to a multi-vendor strategy over the next 2 years.

2013 SBC Strategies

Access at the edge of fixed networks continues to be where the majority of session border controllers (SBCs) are deployed today, but the use of SBCs for interconnection between service providers continues to expand.

“Wireless access, and specifically voice over LTE (VoLTE), represents solid growth prospects for new SBC deployments over the next two years and is an area where we’re already seeing an impact on sales in the first half of 2013,” said Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC, and IMS at Infonetics Research.
