Mobile service provider SK Telecom has tapped Contela for the deployment of its nationwide LoRa-based IoT network in Korea.

Contela LoRa Gateways and LoRa Network Servers are implemented by SK Telecom for the deployment.

SK Telecom, which competes with KT Corporation, completed the rollout of its nationwide LoRa IoT network last month by using the ISM band (900 Mhz), and introduced commercial IoT services based on the LoRa network on July 4, 2016.

The telecoms plans to center on upbringing diverse IoT services in the areas of automatic metering, location positioning, and remote monitoring to fully leverage the strength of its nationwide LoRa network.

“With the early deployment of a nationwide IoT network, SK Telecom will be able to maintain its position as a pioneer in the field of telecommunications,” said Lee Jong-bong, executive vice president and head, Infra Division, SK Telecom.

Both companies claim to offer new value and convenience to both individual and enterprise customers over the IoT network.

“With the commercial experience from the nationwide LoRa network of SK Telecom and the advantage of our portfolio, Contela will continue to satisfy the customer needs domestically and globally,” said Sun Park, CEO of Contela.

Contela has LoRa Gateway, LoRa Network Server, and Small Cell products like Residential/Enterprise/Outdoor Small Cells as its products with clientele in Korea, Japan, and the United States.

SK Telecom will be investing up to 100 billion won by the end of next year for the IoT infrastructure. The revenue of SK Telecom fell to 12 percent to KRW 1.89 trillion, last year.
