Rostelecom deploys content delivery network featuring Ericsson technology

Rostelecom, Russia’s largest telecoms operator and provider of pay TV services, has deployed a content delivery network (CDN) featuring Ericsson technology.

With this CDN, Rostelecom is addressing the escalating rise in network traffic, the global consumer uptake of online video, and the growing popularity of over-the-top (OTT) services, such as those provided by online movie firms.

With content servers located in 30 major cities across all federal districts of Russia, the new CDN design and integration adds new capabilities and geographic span, the company said.

The high-capacity CDN will help consumers enjoy higher quality video and a better user experience with diminished load time and buffering thanks to reduced network latency and increased throughput. This ability to guarantee high-quality content at maximum speeds gives Rostelecom a significant competitive edge,  the company said.

The network has a capacity of more than 1 terabit per second serving Rostelecom’s 9.5 million broadband customers, from a total base of 28 million subscribers.

The CDN is powered by Ericsson’s Media Delivery Network solution that enables Rostelecom to optimize content delivery across Russia though the strategic distribution of multi-service edge servers, which bring content closer to the end user.

Operators can launch more sustainable business models with content providers and leverage the value of its network in the expanding media world.

With a unique single-platform approach to policy control, routing and caching of all content types, the CDN also allows operators ultimate network efficiency and saves bandwidth, footprint, and operational costs.

Rostelecom is building new video business models on Ericsson’s Media Delivery Network solution. According to Ove Anebygd, vice president and head of Solution Area Media, Ericsson, this shows how Ericsson is transforming the operator CDN market.
