Telecom equipment vendor Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) will support NYU Wireless in its 5G research activities.
The research partnership will enable NSN, an advisory board member of NYU Wireless, to speed up its 5G initiatives. Recently, NYU Wireless shifted to a 13,500 square feet of research space, with four labs for wireless research, computing, and medical applications at the NYU-Poly campus in MetroTech Center in downtown Brooklyn.
NYU Wireless has around 20 faculty and 100 graduate students. It focus on wireless communications systems, signals, and antennas on the millimeter wave (mmwave) frequency bands could result in more than a thousand-fold increase in the data capacity of mobile devices in the coming years.
“The telecom industry is facing a massive increase in data demand while needing to boost profitability and offer personalized experience at the same time. 5G is needed to address those needs in the next decade,” said Lauri Oksanen, vice president, Research and Technology, NSN.
Earlier, Chinese telecom equipment vendor Huawei announced significant investments in 5G space.
