Nokia Empowers du with a 400G National Optical Backbone Network, Elevating UAE’s Telecommunications Landscape

Nokia, a global technology leader, has successfully established a 400G optical backbone network for Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), commonly known as du.

Spanning the entire UAE, from the Western borders to the East, this groundbreaking network is set to revolutionize telecommunications infrastructure in the country. The optical network, utilizing Nokia’s super coherent optics, enables du to meet the burgeoning demand for network capacity while ensuring an enriched user experience.

Leveraging Nokia’s fifth-generation super-coherent Photonic Service Engine (PSE-Vs) and CDC-F ROADM technology, du’s new optical backbone network guarantees efficient delivery of 400G wavelengths across the UAE.

The implementation of Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) further enhances service level agreements by enabling automatic rerouting through alternate paths, optimizing network performance. Additionally, this innovative network facilitates Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) capabilities, enabling du to capitalize on wholesale service offerings.

Saleem Alblooshi, Chief Technology Officer at du, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Nokia and how it aligns with du’s commitment to shaping a better tomorrow.

Saleem Alblooshi stated, “Nokia’s optical technology not only enhances our subscribers’ experiences but also ensures the creation of a national optical backbone that is energy-efficient, sustainable, and ready to face the future.”

Rima Manna, Vice President for Nokia’s Middle East Market Unit, emphasized du’s continuous efforts to meet the increasing demand for capacity, noting that Nokia’s solution will empower du to expand capacity and optimize service delivery, ultimately benefiting both the company and its customers.

Nokia’s PSE-V, a high-performance optical transport equipment, forms the core of this technological advancement. Implementing second-generation probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) with continuous baud rate adjustment, the Photonic Service Engine (PSE-V) supports higher wavelength capacities over longer distances, including 400G over any distance. This achieves higher efficiency and cost-effectiveness, contributing to a sustainable and forward-facing telecommunications landscape in the UAE.
