Nokia says it assisted telecom operators to cut energy use

Nokia announced its annual sustainability report for 2017.
Nokia Finland jobNokia said it assisted customers – mainly telecom operators — reduce their energy use and emissions, with modernized customer base station sites using, on average, 44 percent less energy.

The Finland-based telecom equipment maker did not reveal the actual reduction in energy by the use of its equipments by telecom operator customers.

Nokia reduced its own energy consumption by 3 percent and water consumption by more than 14 percent. Nokia also recycled 80 percent of waste from buildings.

Nokia’s corporate community investment programs — UNICEF programs on digital learning in Kenya, mHealth in Indonesia, and education program in Myanmar — reached nearly 254,100 people during the year.

Nokia aims to reduce emissions from its own operations by 41 percent by 2030, and to reduce scope-3 emissions – emissions from customer use of its products – by 75 percent by 2030.

“We are optimistic about the future and the potential of digital technologies to ignite a new era that will not only bring greater business opportunities for our company and others in our industry, but also personal, social and economic benefits for people everywhere,” Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri said.
